A Little Behind

Yesterday Sadie has her bi-weekly speech therapy appointment with Stacy.  During this week's therapy Stacy did an evaluation of Sadie's progress.  Based on the activities Sadie is doing (cooing, turning to noises, understanding hi/bye, etc), it looks as though Sadie falls in the 4-6 month range, with a few achievements in the 6-9 month category.  While it is painful to hear that your daughter is behind, it actually is right where one would expect her to be.  Sadie got her hearing aids at 7 weeks old and started wearing them all waking hours at 4 months.  That means that Sadie's hearing age is between 2-4 months.  Subtract that from her current age (8 months) and you end up with 4-6 months.

During our therapy session we also worked on seeing how far away a noise could be and Sadie still react to the sound.  Stacy was able to shake a rattle about 5-6 feet away and Sadie went looking for the noise.  I thought that was pretty good! We tried a little farther away and a little quieter, but she kept getting distracted by the dog and the noisy neighbor (blowing grass off his driveway..ugh!).  So we will keep working on it and seeing how far she can hear!

Hi!

The past few weeks we have been working with Sadie to wave Hi and Bye and she has finally started doing it!  Now, her hand is a little shaky still, but she has definitely grasped the concept.  It is pretty darn cute!

We are still continuing with her Physical Therapy.  While her torticollis is almost completely corrected, now the therapist wants to work on Sadie gaining arm strength in order to prepare her to crawl. The girl has some fantastic ab strength, but her arms are pretty weak.  Ever since Sadie was born, she has hated being on her tummy and now we are seeing the effects of that.  The therapist, however, is optimistic that Sadie will gain the strength quickly and start crawling away.  Unfortunately the only way to get that upper body strength is to force her to do tummy time.  So that makes for a cranky Lovins household. I am going to have to find some very interesting toys around the house to keep her occupied/entertained!

We are still working on Sadie saying her consonants, however, I swear this weekend she said "hi" to me.  I went to pick her up and said "hi" and she let go a deep breath and it sounded just like she said "hi" back. Brilliant, I tell you.  She is just brilliant :)

Here are a few pictures of the past couple of month (notice the slight head tilt in the first picture and how it has been corrected in the next 2).  Enjoy!

Shaping Up

Today Sadie had her 2nd sound booth test.  This time she was tested with her hearing aids off and with them on.  When she had her hearing aids off, she responded to the audiologists voice at the appropriate levels, however, she didn't respond to the tones that they played.  When we tested her with the aids on, she responded the same way.  The audiologist felt pretty confident this was simply because tones are "boring" and not interesting for a child.  She basically is just ignoring them.  We go back in 5 weeks for another test.  We are hoping by around 9-10 months we will be able to have a better gauge as to what she is really hearing so we can ensure her aids are set appropriately!

We went last week for Physical Therapy and Sadie did GREAT!  Her torticollis (head tilt) is now only about 5 degrees.  She is rolling over both ways and making great strides in sitting up.  The PT is now letting us go two weeks before our next visit.  Keep your fingers crossed that her torticollis will be completely corrected the next time we go in.  (A huge THANK YOU to my mom who does therapy with her 3-5 times a day when she watches her!)

We met with the speech therapist earlier this week and she still thinks that Sadie is hearing well.  Now we are just really working on her vocalizing sounds.  Our hope is that in the next month or two she will be saying some consonant sounds ("b", "d", "mmm.")  I think that it is really starting to hit me that she has hearing loss as she is starting to become slightly delayed in the vocalization area.  BUT.....I will do everything I can to get her back up to speed.  We aren't too behind yet, and can always make up the time as we go!!

In other news, we are on night 4 of not swaddling Sadie and (knock on wood) it is going well.  Last time we tried this she woke up every hour crying.  After 4 hours of that, I finally put her back in her swaddle.  This time, however, I think she is enjoying it much more.  She now sleeps on her side and occasionally even her belly.  I hope she continues with the good sleeping!

I am a bad mom and don't have any pictures to post since my last entry....so I will try and take some this weekend to put up!
